Experts’ Report | Ukrainian women and men in Poland: mental health, integration and migration plans – findings from the first wave of the BiC Lab study

We present the findings from the first wave of the largest panel study to date on the situation of Ukrainian women and men living in Poland, conducted by the Behaviour in Crisis Lab research team. The analysis of data from more than one thousand respondents reveals a complex picture of integration, psychological well-being and migration plans almost three years after the outbreak of the full-scale war.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 brought immense suffering, including attacks on civilians and widespread traumatic experiences. Armed conflicts often lead to serious mental health problems, and it is anticipated that the war in Ukraine will cause significant psychological distress among its inhabitants. According to stress theory, the loss of coping resources plays a key role—experiencing war trauma can profoundly affect mental well-being, especially when perceived coping resources are lost.
