Goal of the project

The Jagiellonian Panel study consists of a series of panel studies, for which people entering adulthood (18 and over) are recruited. The objective of the study is to monitor the fate of the inhabitants of Krakow and the surrounding area from reaching adulthood throughout their lives, taking into account situations that can be described as a crisis, not only in the individual dimension (e.g. stress related to passing important exams in life, such as high school final exams, COVID-19 pandemic), but also in the social, geopolitical (currently a crisis due to the war in Ukraine) and economic (deteriorating material situation due to inflation) dimensions.

The project was initiated thanks to a group of people born in 2002 who experienced very particular crisis events: the strikes in 2019 and the pandemic in 2020-2022. For many, the moment of entering adulthood is also a time of passing the final exams and making difficult decisions regarding further education and work. As part of the continuation of the project, we have the opportunity to compare the situation of the group inaugurating the study with the situation of subsequent groups of young people who will enter adulthood in slightly different conditions. It is, therefore, an opportunity to capture the unique experiences of 18-year-olds, which makes it possible to monitor their further experiences (active or passive growing up, aging). Systematic research, as part of the panel, will enable the study of respondents' frame of mind and reactions to crises and historical breakthrough moments (such as the outbreak of war in Ukraine, rapid market changes, increase in prices, inflation, the crisis in the housing market, etc.).

The project collects data on selected aspects of the quality of life, including educational activity, social activity (including social work, volunteering), activity on the labor market, reaction to and assessment of current important events in the country and abroad, state of health, well-being, preparation to cope with stress in difficult situations (in the context of passing the secondary school-leaving examination), plans to continue education, take up a job, leave the country or move to other localities (spatial mobility), social bonds, etc.

The study was conducted for the first time in 2021 on a sample of people born in 2002. The research was continued in 2022 with young adults born in 2003. In 2022, the second measurement was also carried out with people born in 2002. From 2023 on, new generations will be recruited for the new wave of the study.

In the study, adults born in a given year are recruited using a panel enrollment form. People classified into the panel are surveyed using the CAWI (Computer-Assisted Web Interview) technique 1-2 times per year, based on a questionnaire. In addition, during the survey, telephone contact is initiated to increase the response rate.
