On January 31, 2024, a seminar "Exploring the Environmental Crisis in Social Science and Humanities" was held, organized by the Behavior in Crisis Lab.

As part of the seminar, Vanessa Weihgold gave a talk "Relations to nature: Do we need an extension of attachment theory?" (University of Tübingen, International Center for Ethics in Sciences and Humanities), as well as Joanna Grzymała-Moszczyńska and Weronika Kałwak "Should patients change the world? Mental health professionals' experiences, practices and attitudes to climate change and mental health" (Institute of Psychology, Jagiellonian University). The speeches were accompanied by a discussion on the role of science in combating the climate crisis.

On January 26, 2024, the conference "Policy of preparedness for humanitarian crises: the perspective of social assistance" was held, organized by the Municipal Social Welfare Center in Krakow, co-organized by the Behavior in Crisis Lab, the Institute of Sociology of the Jagiellonian University and the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Jagiellonian University.

It was addressed to employees of the social welfare system, as well as people dealing with the issue of response in crisis situations and people exposed to working in such conditions. As part of the conference, speeches were given by BiC Lab members - prof. Hubert Kaszyński and prof. Katarzyna Ornacka (talk “Interdisciplinary research on security policy. The perspective of Krakow and the international research group Healthy SOAR”), as well as Dr. Jakub Firlus and Dr. Agata Cebera (talk “Does the policy of preparedness for humanitarian crises need a national legal framework?”). The discussion panel "The security architecture of social assistance after COVID-19 and mass migration from Ukraine" was attended by, among others, prof. Małgorzata Kossowska, who spoke about the need for communication between academia and the social environment and about the factors that determined the assistance provided to refugees from Ukraine. The aim of the conference was to identify recommendations for regional preparedness policy for humanitarian crises.

A methodological workshop on Thematic Analysis will be held in April at the Behavior In Crisis Lab. Thematic Analysis is an established systematic method of qualitative data analysis, broadly used in social science and humanities, including mixed-method empirical research based on realist grounds. The workshop on the introductory level (8 hours) will be given by one of the method's authors Prof. Gareth Terry from Massey University in New Zealand.

A new thematic group addressing issues related to the climate crisis at the Behavior In Crisis Lab will be inaugurated through a seminar organized on January 31st in the Institute of Psychology JU, titled "Exploring the Environmental Crisis in Social Science and Humanities: Qualitative and Mixed-Methods Approaches". The seminar will feature invited guests from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (Dr. Małgorzata Kowalska from the Institute of Anthropology and Ethnology), and from the University of Tübingen in Germany (Vanessa Weihgold from the International Centre for Ethics in Sciences and Humanities). The seminar is organized in collaboration with the Qualitative Research Lab at the Institute of Psychology JU.

A new thematic group at the Behavior In Crisis Lab started this academic year with the aim of addressing issues related to the climate crisis, including: climate change and mental health and well-being, climate activism, mitigation of climate change, and pro-environmental behaviors. It is a research-centered initiative that involves searching for and developing existing research cooperation, both interdisciplinary and across institutions and internationally. Colleagues interested in initiating research cooperation related to issues of the climate crisis are encouraged to reach out to Weronika Kalwak at weronika.kalwak@uj.edu.pl. A meeting will be organized later this winter.

W ramach nowego pasma literackiego - „Dobre książki” - w Radiu Kraków Kultura, prof. Małgorzata Kossowska rozmawiała wspólnie z prof. Piotrem Sztompką na temat książek nominowanych do Nagrody im. Jana Długosza. Dyskusja dotyczyła między innymi książki Konstantego Geberta pt. „Ostateczne rozwiązania. Ludobójcy i ich dzieło.” Zachęcamy do odsłuchania audycji!
